International
Hunger Program
International hunger programs supported in the past
have included:
The
Christian Health and Nutrition Center, located in
Mbujimayi, Republic of the Congo, a city of over two
million inhabitants who have very limited access to
medical services, provides many health and
nutritional services to the city’s population.
Services to the population include minimal fee
medical care, a vaccination program, a program to
restore severely malnourished children to health,
pre-natal and post-natal counseling, and nutritional
programs.
The
Cormiers Watershed Project is a program designed to
help residents of the Cormiers Watershed area near
Leogane, Haiti learn and practice soil conversation
efforts. The Cormiers Watershed is home to many
subsistence farmers that scratch out a living on
small plots (generally around 1.5 acres) that are
difficult to farm and prone to erosion. Because of
the project, soil erosion in the area has been
significantly reduced and the program is now going
to be expanded to other watershed areas in the
region.
-
Community Development Resource Agency- $15,000
The
Community Development Resource Agency (CDRA) program
supports efforts for land reform and rural
agricultural development in South Africa. The CDRA
program addresses hunger-related issues in South
Africa in several ways. They have established
community agriculture support groups whose purpose
is to enhance the agricultural output of the rural
population. CDRA also provides a platform and forum
for rural people to express their needs for rural
development and, thereby, place rural development
and poverty on the national agenda. A third
initiative of CDRA is to provide educational
resources and training to the less privileged so
they can make meaningful contributions to their
communities.
Domestic
Hunger Program
Programs
supported in the past have included:
The
Emergency Food Program provides food assistance to
needy residents of Vance County. Residents aided
through this program include the elderly,
single-family households, and low-income families.
The
Society of St. Andrew is a project that gleans
millions of pounds of fresh produce from North
Carolina fields that would otherwise go to waste.
Since 1992, the program has distributed over
thirty-two million pounds of food that would have
otherwise gone to waste in North Carolina fields.
The
Tarboro Community Outreach program operates a food
pantry and soup kitchen to assist those in need of
nourishment. In addition to food, the program also
dispenses hospitality, kindness, and understanding.
The Wake
Interfaith Hospitality Network sponsors a nutrition
program that provides breakfast, hot lunch and an
afternoon snack for frail elders and disabled
adults. The center’s nutrition program is especially
important since many of the participants have a
range of health conditions for which proper
nutrition is a necessary component of adequate care.
The
United Church Ministries program provides assistance
to those in need of food. Food bags are prepared and
distributed to individuals in need throughout the
community. Over 70,000 persons have benefited from
this program since its inception in 1983.
This
program of Housing for Hope will provide nutritional
supplements such as Resource and Isomil to persons
with high-risk health needs. This program is one of
many services that is provided by Housing for New
Hope to those in need in the Durham area.
The RCS
Hunger Ministry serves those in need in the New Bern
Community. The program includes a soup kitchen as
well as the distribution of groceries and prepared
foods to needy individuals. The program provided
over 100,000 meals last year in the form of grocery
orders for at-home preparation.

residents of Beaufort County. Recipients include
infants and the elderly who are provided with food
that will suit their special nutritional
