COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
Prepare to Hear God’s Call in Jonah & Ruth – Joyce MacKichan Walker (AM2 & PM2 – 2 HOUR CLASS, OFFERED TWICE) An opportunity to explore the Presbyterian Women’s 2007-2008 HORIZONS Bible study with the author of the Suggestions for Leaders, as she introduces the main themes discovered in the Jonah and Ruth stories.
Entering the Way of the Child– Wynn McGregor (AM4) A child’s spiritual journey begins very early in life and is shaped by important adults and expanding life experiences. Explore a new resource designed to walk children, ages 6-11, into a deepening relationship with God.
Helping Children Build Strong Character and Commitment – Wynn McGregor (PM4) Our spiritual journey is both inward and outward – a “going in” to discover God and self and a “moving out” to live in God’s world in all circumstances. This session will explore ways to help children know their true selves and that they too can be instruments of God’s love and grace in our world.
Milestones in a Child’s Life – Finley Sutton (AM5) Help children find God by marking milestones, both religious and secular, in family life.
Children’s Books Related to Milestones – Finley Sutton (PM5) Learn to use children’s literature, related to events in a child’s life, as an opportunity for faith-talk conversations.
Friendship, Failure, and Forgiveness in The Kite Runner – Bonnie Stone (AM8) Explore the power of friendship, using Khaled Hosseini’s remarkable first novel, The Kite Runner. Come having read the novel, prepared to explore your own personal memories.
LEADING CREATIVE BIBLE STUDY WITH YOUTH – natalie Sarkowski (AM12) Learn about and practice different Bible study methods, participate in creative learning activities, and debrief the challenges of doing group Bible study with young people.
Becoming the Church of Tomorrow, Today – Rebecca Reyes (PM8) Experience a workshop that provides resources, strategies, and examples to help a church community embrace the call of multiculturalism.
Gospel, Not Gimmicks: Bonding Mission & Church Growth – Christopher Edmonston (AM11 & PM11 – 2 HOUR CLASS, OFFERED TWICE) The secret to church growth may not be found in the consultant you hire or the program you implement. It is not necessarily purpose driven, it is missional.
THE CHURCH IN THE WORLD
Blessed be the Stories of the Peacemakers – Gun Ho Lee & Sung Hee Chang (AM10) Look at the theme of peace-making by weaving stories of peace-makers, both from the Bible and the world over.
Up from the Ashes: Pathways toward a Just Peace in Israel-Palestine – Mark Davidson (PM12) Learn about ways the Presbyterian Church is involved in alleviating suffering in this critical region of the world and working for a just peace. Discussion will include the history of the conflict, the suffering of the Palestinian people under the Israeli occupation, the security concerns of the Israeli people, and much more. Denominational materials will be available for use in local churches.
CHURCH LIFE
Prophetic Preaching – Jeremiah Wright (AM1) Prepare to get a better grasp on developing sermons which are “prophetic” in nature. Gain skills to preach sermons that speak truth to power, truth in love, and truth to the powerless.
Prophet and Priest – Jeremiah Wright (PM1) The course will teach the difference between the role of a prophet and the role of a priest. The ultimate goal in terms of “growing together” is to aim for an “incarnational ministry” that is both prophetic and priestly.
Mimestry Workshop – Cherise Garrido (AM6 & PM6 – 4 HOUR CLASS) Experience praise, dance, drama & sign language as found in mime ministry. The morning session will include theory and understanding of mime. The afternoon will involve putting on the mime face and creating together.
LITURGICAL DANCE – Roberta Graves (PM9) Find out more about how to express your faith and feelings through movement, including posture and gestures in the pew, appreciating liturgical dance as a spectator, and composing and doing liturgical movements. For dancers and non-dancers – all you need is heart!
STAYING ALIVE AS LONG AS YOU LIVE – Denise Waters (PM 10) Experience ways of maintaining brain fitness and increasing your intelligence in this interactive workshop for seniors and those who work with seniors. We’ll also learn about “excellent elders.”
THEOLOGY
The Book of Confessions – David Garrison and David Keck (AM3 & PM3 – 4 HOUR CLASS) Explore the confessions, how they nurture faith, and what they offer to the church in today’s culture. This course is open to all, encouraged for Elders, and required of CLPs. Registrants will be asked to help lead discussion of one of the confessions.
Touch of Grace: Reclaiming the Ministry of Healing – Susan Harsh-Cafferty (AM7 & PM 7 – 2 HOUR CLASS, OFFERED TWICE) Experience hands-on healing and guided meditation. This course is based on Scripture and the tradition of the church.
“When you lie down and when you rise up” – Daily Prayer for the People of God – Paul Lang (AM9) Study the biblical basis for daily prayer, using The Book of Common Worship — Daily Prayer Edition, and discuss the broader recovery of the practice of daily prayer among both laity and clergy.
ETHICS FOR OUR TIME – Toddie Peters (AM13 & PM13 – 2 HOUR CLASS, OFFERED TWICE)
Deal with the
important questions of how we are called as
individuals and as church communities to live our
faith in a world of poverty, disease, hunger, and
rampant inequality, as well as what it means to live
with integrity as relatively privileged members of
our global society. PRAYING THE PSALMS – Spottswood Graves (AM14 & PM14 – 2 HOUR CLASS, OFFERED TWICE) Learn to use the Psalms to find the words to share with God your heartfelt thoughts of joy, disappointment, and hope.
