Donovan Drake to
preach on 'Day1' April 6 & 13 |
|
The Rev. Dr. Donovan Drake, pastor of Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church, located near Duke University's east campus in Durham, N.C., will preach April 6 and 13 on "Day 1," a nationally broadcast radio program also accessible by podcast at www.Day1.org. Each program includes an interview with Drake conducted by the program's host and executive producer, Peter Wallace. Drake, whose father is a retired Presbyterian minister and mother a freelance writer, has served at Trinity Avenue for ten years. After earning a master's degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, he was ordained in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at First Presbyterian Church in Morganton, N.C., where he served as associate pastor for over five years. In 2005 he received a doctor of ministry degree in preaching from McCormick Theological Seminary. "Gaining Recognition" is the title of his sermon airing April 6, based on the story in Luke 24 of a post-resurrection appearance of Christ to two of his followers who didn't recognize him. Drake's second sermon, airing April 13, reveals "God's Most Difficult Miracle" – the amazing work of the early church recorded in Acts 2. He says, "Followers of Christ are to be involved in a miracle: selling possessions and goods and distributing the proceeds to all, as any have need. That is one tough miracle…. How did God get all those people to loosen up their grips on their wallets and sell off all their stuff? Difficult back then but I would darn near say it would be impossible today — we're so entrenched in getting and having and knowing." Formerly known as "The Protestant Hour," "Day 1" has been broadcast every week for more than 62 years, winning numerous awards in the process, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Communicators Award of Excellence in inspirational radio. It is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church.
