Director of Christian Education

Position Summary

 Guided by her/his own Christian faith, the D.C.E. has responsibility for education programs for all age groups, providing opportunities to experience God’s love, acquire knowledge of the Bible, and learn about mission and service, while being actively supportive of and sensitive to the whole mission of Mt. Bethel Presbyterian Church.

Minimum qualifications include (but are not limited to): College degree; course work and/or experience in Christian education or related field; training in and knowledge of the Reformed Tradition; energy and enthusiasm; strong interpersonal and communication skills; strong organization skills; flexibility and creativity; knowledge of Christian scriptures, beliefs and church life; and willingness to pursue continuing education.

Responsibilities include: Overall responsibility for the Christian Education Program at Mt. Bethel including participation in meetings; Sunday morning Church School; working with the Session, Diaconate, committees and teachers; curriculum and resources for educational programs; program evaluation; pertinent administrative tasks; and participation and leadership in worship, outreach and special events.  Special emphasis is to be given to programs and involvement of children and youth in the life of the church.

Communications include: Generation and periodic revision of printed literature and postings on the church bulletin boards and website; regular interaction with church staff and committees; regular office hours; and promoting awareness of Christian Education activities among the congregation.

Working relationships include: The pastor, for supervision and evaluation; Christian Education Committee, as partners in this endeavor; Youth Committee, for coordination of activities and resources; Personnel Committee, providing feedback, support and evaluation; church secretary, providing clerical support; teachers and other volunteers, to receive training, orientation, supervision and support; and the Presbytery’s Educators’ Fellowship, for support and networking.

The first 90 days of work comprise a ‘temporary employment’ period. At the end of this period, the church may extend an offer to join the church staff.
