Ministries of Church Development & Evangelism

Monte Johnston, Moderater

Mission:  The Church Development & Evangelism Committee seeks to further the work of the Presbytery in expanding the ministries of its existing churches and to establish new churches, so that more people might find themselves as a part of God’s Kingdom.

The PC(USA) is losing around 45,000 members a year.  This fact loudly proclaims that we have grown too inwardly-focused.  People no longer look at us and see that we want to share the love of Christ with them.  The CDE committee believes that this must change and change now.  It is our task to do all that we can to enable the members of our presbytery to reorient themselves to serving their neighbors in word and deed.

The work of the Committee is divided among three sub-groups:

  1. Evangelism.  This group is committed to educating all Presbyterian churches in New Hope Presbytery as to the importance and centrality of evangelism for the life and mission of the church.  They are actively involved in providing educational and training opportunities in different approaches to, and methods of, evangelism.  In addition, they want to see more churches make the commitment to evangelism as outlined by the denomination.

  1. New Church Development. This group is committed to planting churches in such a way that demonstrates good stewardship of the limited resources of the Presbytery.  They are thus attentive to demographic trends, the necessity of strong and effective leadership, and the possibilities of partnering with existing churches within the presbytery.  Current projects include:

    1. Manantiel de Vida Hispanic Fellowship
    2. Durham Hispanic Council
    3. Greenville Korean Fellowship
    4. Clayton Presbyterian Fellowship

  1. Church Redevelopment.  This group is committed to partnering with existing churches as they undertake new projects that will expand their ministry and mission in significant ways.  Current churches include:

    1. Faith Presbyterian Church
    2. Roanoke Island Presbyterian Church
    3. Cornerstone Presbyterian Church
    4. Butner Presbyterian Church
    5. Goldsboro Korean Church
    6. Covenant Presbyterian Church, Wendell
